Effect of Aqueous Cocoa Powder Extract on the Biochemical and Hematological Parameters of Female Albino Rat

Nutrition as the basis of good health and disease prevention is a well-established fact. Using phytochemicals in plants to prevent or manage chronic ailments is normally based on the knowledge of their availability in such plant materials and their effect on body metabolism, thus the focus of this research. Forty female Wilstar strain Albino rats weighing 200-250g were randomly selected and divided into five groups based on the administered doses of aqueous cocoa powder extract (200mg/kg, 300mg/kg, 500mg/kg, 1000mg/kg, and control), each consisting of 8 rats. The extract was administered orally once daily for 40 days. Fasting blood sample was collected from the tail vein daily to determine the blood glucose concentration. At the expiration of forty days experimental period, fasting blood samples were collected from all the rats by cardiac puncture (under diethylether anesthesia) for biochemical and hematological studies. Result showed a significant (p<0.05) reduction in body weight, plasma cholesterol, triglyceride, LDL-C,ALT, total red blood cells and haemoglobin; a significant increase (p<0.05) in plasma HDL-C; little or no difference in the plasma glucose, total protein, albumin, globulin, creatinine, and total white blood cells levels between the treated and the control groups. Conclusively, intake of aqueous cocoa powder extract does not disrupt hepatocellular integrity but modifies plasma lipid and thus, has potential cardiovascular protective properties in non-diabetic state.
