Gravimetric and gasometric methods were used to study the inhibitive effect of Allium cepa (onion) extract (ACE) on acid corrosion of copper. The plant extract acts as corrosion inhibitor in acid environment. The weight loss and the volume of hydrogen gas evolved decreased with increase in concentration of ACE. The inhibition efficiency increased with inhibitor concentration and it was time dependent. Inhibition was attributed to the adsorption of quertecine, allin and allicine – the phytochemicals present through the hetero atoms, N, O and S present in these compounds. These blocked active sites on the copper surface through adsorption forming (Metal─Inhibitor)ads complex on the metal surface. The adsorption followed Langmuir adsorption isotherm. The optimum inhibition efficiency was 81.3% at 70g/L.
